MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The #11 Birmingham-Southern baseball team got a pair of wins today, 7-6 and 13-11, over the Lynx of Rhodes College.
The Panthers (27-4, 10-1 SCAC) needed extra innings to get the win in game one. The Lynx (21-11, 6-5) jumped out first with five runs over the opening innings. BSC scored, but was unable to take a lead until the top of the eighth. Down 6-5, the Lynx were able to score in the home half of the ninth to send the game into extra frames.
#Bruce Maxwell# led off the tenth with a double down the left field line to set up #Jon Walker# for the game-winning RBI with his own double down the left field line to put ‘Southern up 7-6. #Clay Jones# shut Rhodes down in the bottom of the inning to salt away the Panther victory.
Walker and #Sam Hill# led the Panthers with two RBI each. #J.D. Hulse# amassed the highest hit total in game one with four to lead both teams. Jones got the win on the mound in 2.1 innings of work, allowing one hit with three strikeouts in relief.
The Panthers were able to stave off a seventh inning Rhodes rally to take game two 13-11. With the Panthers leading 12-6 after seven, the Lynx came up in their final at bat and scored five runs. They scored their runs on six singles and two walks to pull within two, but #Drew Crofton# was able to get the final two outs of the game to maintain the win.
#Sam Hill# hit two solo homeruns to bookend the Panthers’ scoring, one in the first and another in the seventh. #Brandon Ricco# and #Bruce Maxwell# added solo shots of their own, back-to-back to lead off the fifth. #Michael McCalib# got his sixth win in the start, going four-and-two-thirds innings allowing six runs on six hits.
‘Southern will wrap up the three-game series with Rhodes tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
