MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 11 Birmingham-Southern baseball team won its second consecutive SCAC East Division title today at Rhodes College, defeating the Lynx 10-7 to sweep the three-game series.
The Panthers (28-4, 11-1 SCAC) scored early and often against the Lynx (21-12, 6-6 SCAC), plating runs in all but four innings. #J.D. Hulse# got things going in the first with a lead-off double. He scored on the next at bat by #Drew Leachman# after advancing to third on a wild pitch.
Rhodes got on the board in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead going into the third, but #Jon Walker# drove in two more BSC runs in the fourth to retake the lead 3-2 for the Panthers. ‘Southern scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings off a combination of hits, walks, and errors to go up 9-3.
The Lynx scored two in the seventh and two in the eighth to cut the lead to three, but came up empty in the ninth as the Panthers hung on for their 28th win of the season and their second-straight SCAC East Division Championship.
#Brian Higginbotham# and #Jon Walker# each drove in three runs on the day with #Josh Whitaker#, #Bruce Maxwell# and #Drew Leachman# accounting for one run apiece to round out the scoring for the Panthers. #Brandon Ricco# led BSC with four hits in four at bats for the game.
#Clay Malcolm# (4-1) gets the win in the start, going six-and-one-third innings. He allowed four runs on six hits, walking three and striking out five.
The Panthers have a double header at Maryville College on Wednesday before closing out their SCAC schedule this weekend at Oglethorpe. The double with Maryville starts at 3:00 p,m. and the series with the Petrels starts at 2:00 p.m. in Atlanta on Saturday.
