LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.—The 10th-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team went on the road Tuesday and lost a close game to Covenant College, 11-9, in Lookout Mountain, Ga. The Panthers fall to 26-7 overall, while the Scots move to 18-11.
The Panthers got off to a quick start, scoring four runs right away in the top of the first inning. Covenant scored a single run in the bottom of the first, but so did BSC in the top of the third to go up 5-1. The Scots cut it to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth, then 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Panthers went up 6-4 in the top of the sixth before Covenant took its first lead in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to go up 7-6. BSC reclaimed the lead one last time in the top of the seventh with three runs to go up 9-7, but the Scots scored four in the bottom of the seventh to take the 11-9 lead, and held BSC scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Both teams recorded 13 hits, but the Panthers committed two errors. Senior Bryan Higginbotham led BSC at the plate, going 3-of-4. Freshman Lewis Hammond started on the mound and went 4.1 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts. Junior Jordan Burchett came in for the next 1.2 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs, followed by senior Brooks Webb (0-1) who took the loss after giving up three hits and two earned runs. Senior Drew Crofton threw the last 1.1 innings and gave up one hit with one strikeout.
BSC returns home this weekend for the final conference series, taking on Oglethorpe in a 1 p.m. doubleheader, Saturday, and a 1 p.m. single game, Sunday.
