No. 9 Panthers split with Oglethorpe

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The ninth-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team split at home today with Oglethorpe in the last SCAC series of the season, winning game one, 8-0, but dropping game two, 10-9. The Panthers now stand at 27-8 overall and are atop the SCAC East Division standings at 11-3; the Stormy Petrels move to 17-17 overall and 6-7 in the SCAC.

Prior to the game, seniors Sam Hill, Drew Leachman, and Brandon Ricco were honored for reaching 200 career hits this season. It is the first time in conference history that three seniors in the same graduating class have all hit the milestone in the same season; only 25 players in conference history have hit the 200-hit milestone.

In the first game, the Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, once in the bottom of the fourth, and added five runs in the bottom of the fifth of the seven-inning game.

BSC had 13 hits to OU's four. Seniors JD Hulse, Leachman, and Ricco, and sophomores Brandon Perry and Bruce Maxwell, all recorded two hits each, with Leachman going 2-of-3. Perry and sophomore John Lawroski both had two RBI.

On the mound, senior Clay Malcolm moved to 8-0 on the season, throwing the complete game while giving up four hits with four strikeouts. It was his first shutout of the year.

In the nightcap, BSC got off to a quick start again, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first (including a two-run home run by Maxwell) and second to go up 6-0. Oglethorpe put its first run of the day on the board in the top of the third, then added another in the top of the fourth, but the Panthers extended their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a Hill home run.

The Petrels rallied in the top of the sixth, however, scoring seven runs to take a 9-7 lead. BSC cut it to 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth, but OU scored another single run in the top of the seventh to go back up by two. BSC scored once more in the bottom of the eighth, but wasn't able to overcome the lead.

BSC recorded 13 hits and Oglethorpe had 12. Hill was 3-of-4 at the plate, and Maxwell led with four RBI. Junior Jesse Meier started on the mound and went five innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts. Senior Drew Crofton (1-1) came in for the next inning and took the loss after giving up one hit with one strikeout. Senior Michael McCalib came in for the last three innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.

The teams wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Striplin Field. If BSC wins, it will clinch its third straight SCAC East Division title.
