GREENCASTLE, Ind.—The 10th-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of DePauw University today, losing 7-6 in Greencastle, Ind. The Panthers fall to 26-6 overall and 10-2 in the SCAC.
BSC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third, courtesy of a home run by senior JD Hulse, a two-run single by sophomore Bruce Maxwell, and a sacrifice fly-out by senior Bryan Higginbotham.
DePauw cut the lead to 4-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third, and then took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, 6-4.
In the top of the sixth, the Panthers cut the lead to 6-5 on an RBI single by junior Jon Walker, but DePauw increased its lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh. BSC was able to cut it to 7-6 in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by senior Brandon Ricco with two outs, but the Panthers weren't able to score again.
Senior Michael McCalib started on the mound and threw three innings, giving up four hits and one earned run with one strikeout. Senior Richard Vance (3-1) came in for one out in the fourth and gave up the game-winning run for the loss. Senior Anthony Bianchi, junior Jordan Burchett, and senior Clay Jones all also saw action.
Ricco led BSC at the plate, going 3-of-5, and Maxwell led with two RBI. The Panthers got 12 total hits to DePauw's seven, and committed two errors.
The Panthers are on the road again this Tuesday, traveling to Mount Lookout, Ga., to take on Covenant College at 4 p.m. BSC is then at home next weekend for a conference series against Oglethorpe.
