MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The No. 12 Birmingham-Southern baseball team dropped a game on the road this evening to Huntingdon College, losing 10-5 in Montgomery. The Panthers fall to 28-9, while the Hawks move to 20-13.
BSC scored two runs in the top of the first inning, with RBI from senior Sam Hill and sophomore Bruce Maxwell. Huntingdon proceeded to tie it up in the bottom of the first, and then score one in the bottom of the second, two in the bottom of the third, and two in the bottom of the fourth to go up 7-1.
The Panthers put two more runs on the board in the top of the fifth on a two-run double by Maxwell, but the Hawks went up 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth and then 10-4 in the bottom of the eight. BSC scored once more in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by senior Drew Leachman.
Huntingdon out-hit BSC 13-10. Leachman, who was recently voted SCAC Player-of-the-Year, led the Panthers at the plate, going 4-of-5, while Maxwell, a First-Team All-SCAC selection, led with three RBI.
Junior Jesse Meier (7-1), another First-Team All-SCAC pick, started on the mound and took the loss, his first of the season. He threw three innings and gave up eight hits and four earned runs with two strikeouts. Freshman Lewis Hammond came in for the next two innings and gave up two hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts, followed by sophomore Blake Yance for another two innings (3 hits, 1 strikeout) and junior Jordan Burchett for the final inning (0 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 strikeout).
The Panthers and Hawks will face each other again tomorrow in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Striplin Field in Birmingham.
