GREENCASTLE, Ind.—The No. 10 Birmingham-Southern baseball team swept DePauw University today in a doubleheader to move to 26-5 overall and 10-1 in the SCAC. The Panthers won by the scores of 6-3 and 17-6, both in seven innings.
In game one, the teams traded runs in the second inning before BSC broke it open with four runs in the top of the fourth to go up 5-1. The Panthers added another in the top of the fifth, and the Tigers scored one in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 6-2. DePauw scored another single run in the bottom of the sixth to cut it to 6-3 for the final score of the game.
Senior Drew Leachman led BSC at the plate going 4-of-4, and junior Jon Walker was 2-of-4. Leachman and Walker also had two RBI apiece. The Panthers recorded 13 total hits to DePauw's 10.
Senior Clay Malcolm (7-0) got the win after throwing the first 5.1 innings and giving up seven hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts. Senior Drew Crofton came in for the final 1.2 innings and got the save, his first of the year.
BSC dominated game two, scoring two runs in the first, one in the second, and five in the fourth to go up 8-0. The Tigers scored three in the bottom of the fourth, but the Panthers answered with three in the top of the fifth, four in the top of the sixth, and two in the top of the seventh to go up 17-3. DePauw was able to add three more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough and the game ended early due to the 10-run rule.
The Panthers recorded 21 hits, led by Leachman and seniors JD Hulse and Bryan Higginbotham, who were all 3-of-4 at the plate. Leachman led with seven RBI.
On the mound, junior Jesse Meier (7-0) started and went 5.2 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Senior Alex Goodsell came in for the final 1.1 inning.
The Panthers and the Tigers square off again tomorrow in a single game at 1 p.m. ET.
