BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The No. 9 Birmingham-Southern baseball team defeated Maryville College today, 4-1, to sweep the two-game series against the Scots after last night’s 20-8 rout. BSC moves to 4-1, while Maryville drops to 0-2.
BSC put up its first run in the bottom of the first when senior J.D. Hulse scored on a Maryville error. The Scots tied it up in the top of the third on an RBI single by Myles Cordell.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth when an RBI single by sophomore Brandon Perry and an RBI sacrifice bunt by sophomore John Lawroski gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead. BSC scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder’s choice RBI by senior Brandon Ricco, and the Panthers held the Scots scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Junior left-hander Jordan Burchett started on the mound for BSC and threw five innings, giving up six hits and an earned run with seven strikeouts. Freshman Lewis Hammond came in after that and picked up the win after going three innings with one hit and a strikeout, and senior Clay Jones came in for the final inning to get the save, giving up one hit with two strikeouts.
Perry led BSC with three of its nine hits, while Cordell led the Scots with two of their eight hits. Nick Dean took the loss for Maryville after throwing 2.1 innings and giving up three hits and two earned runs.
The Panthers are on the road for the next nearly three weeks, traveling to face LaGrange this Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET, followed by the Piedmont College Tournament in Demorest, Ga., Feb. 18-20. BSC then plays a three-game series at Loyola-New Orleans, Feb. 26-27, and returns home on March 4 against Berry College at 6 p.m.
