LaGRANGE, Ga.—Two home runs from sophomore Bruce Maxwell and a solid seven-inning pitching performance from junior Jesse Meier helped the No. 9 Birmingham-Southern baseball team shut out LaGrange College, 10-0, Tuesday afternoon on the road.
The Panthers move to 5-1 on the season, while LaGrange falls to 1-1.
Maxwell was responsible for BSC’s first two runs of the game, courtesy of an RBI single in the top of the first and one of his two home runs in the top of the third. Senior Sam Hill posted an RBI single in the top of the fifth, followed by Maxwell’s second home run, this time worth two RBIs to put BSC up 5-0.
BSC put up all five of the rest of its runs in the top of the eighth inning, thanks to a two-run homer from senior Bryan Higginbotham, a two-RBI double from senior J.D. Hulse, and an RBI single from senior Drew Leachman.
Meier started on the mound for the Panthers and threw seven innings, giving up six hits with three strikeouts. Seniors Michael McCalib and Drew Crofton came in for single-inning performances after Meier left the mound, with McCalib allowing only one hit and Crofton striking out two of the three batters he faced.
The Panthers recorded 12 total hits, led by Maxwell, who was 3-of-4 at the plate with four RBIs.
BSC travels back to Georgia this weekend for the Piedmont College Tournament in Demorest, taking on Virginia Wesleyan College Friday night, Lynchburg College Saturday afternoon, and Piedmont Sunday afternoon.
