DEMOREST, Ga.—The ninth-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team picked up another win on Friday, defeating Virginia Wesleyan, 8-1, in Demorest, Ga., on the campus of Piedmont College.
The Panthers move to 6-1, while the Marlins fall to 3-1.
BSC scored half of its runs in the bottom of the second, going up 2-0 on a two-run double by sophomore John Lawroski, and then 3-0 when Lawroski scored on an error. Senior J.D. Hulse was able to score on a passed ball later in the inning to put the Panthers up 4-0.
The Panthers went up 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by senior Drew Leachman and a fielder’s choice RBI from sophomore Bruce Maxwell.
Wesleyan put its single run on the board in the top of the sixth, and the Panthers added another run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by senior Brandon Ricco to go up 7-1. Ricco recorded another RBI in the bottom of the eighth for the final score of the game.
Senior left-hander Clay Malcolm started on the mound and picked up the win to move to 2-0, allowing four hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. Seniors Drew Crofton and Alex Goodsell also saw action, with Crofton striking out three batters in his two innings of work.
Ricco led the Panthers with three of their 11 hits, going 3-of-5 at the plate with two RBIs. Lawroski also recorded two RBIs.
BSC is back in action tomorrow, taking on Lynchburg College at 2 p.m. ET.
