No. 9 Panthers win sixth straight with 12-4 victory over Piedmont
DEMOREST, Ga.—Senior Sam Hill went 3-of-4 at the plate with two RBIs to help lead the No. 9 Birmingham-Southern Panthers to a 12-4 road win against Piedmont College, Sunday afternoon.
BSC moves to 8-1 with the win, while Piedmont drops to 4-4.
The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Lions responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to tie it up at 2-2. BSC scored twice more in the top of the second, though, to go up 4-2, and added another in the top of the fifth.
Piedmont scored another single run in the bottom of the fifth, cutting it to 5-3, but BSC recorded three more runs in the top of the sixth, one more in the top of the seventh, and three more in the top of the eighth to make it 12-3. The Lions were able to score once more, in the bottom of the eighth, for the final run of the game.
Hill led BSC with three of its 14 hits, while four different Panthers recorded two RBIs apiece. Senior Drew Leachman also posted his first home run of the season. Junior right-handed pitcher Jesse Meier (2-0) started and picked up the win after tossing five innings and giving up five hits and three earned runs with a strikeout. Senior Richard Vance, freshman Lewis Hammond, and senior Clay Jones also made appearances on the mound.
The Panthers travel to New Orleans next weekend for a three-game series against Loyola-New Orleans, Saturday and Sunday.
