NEW ORLEANS—The ninth-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team picked up two road wins today against Loyola-New Orleans, winning 18-8 and 10-5. The Panthers move to 10-1 with their seventh- and eighth-straight wins.
The Panthers were down 3-0 in the first game before taking over the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth. LUNO took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth with five runs to go up 8-4, and BSC cut it to 8-5 in the top of the seventh before exploding for 13 runs in the top of the eighth to go up 18-8.
Senior Sam Hill and sophomore Bruce Maxwell both recorded three of the Panthers' 13 hits, with Hill going 3-of-5 with six RBIs and Maxwell going 3-of-3 with two RBIs. Senior Bryan Higginbotham was also 2-of-3 at the plate with four RBIs.
Senior Clay Malcolm started on the mound and threw 5.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs with one strikeout. Seniors Clay Jones and Drew Crofton came in for the remaining innings, with Jones getting the win.
In the second game, BSC was down 1-0 until the top of the fifth, when the Panthers scored three runs to go up 3-1. Loyola scored one in the bottom of the fifth, but BSC answered with six runs in the top of the sixth to go up 9-2. The Wolfpack scored another run in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the bottom of the seventh, and BSC also added one more in the top of the seventh for a final score of 10-5.
Freshman Evan Grovenstein was 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Senior JD Hulse also had four RBIs and senior Drew Leachman had two.
Junior Jordan Burchett started and got the win, throwing five innings with five hits, two earned runs and seven strikeouts. Freshman Lewis Hammond and senior Trey Brown also saw action on the mound for BSC.
The teams wrap up the three-game series with a single game tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
