BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—After a 5-2 win against North Park University earlier today to extend its winning streak to nine games, the No. 9 Birmingham-Southern baseball team lost to Berry College, 5-4, this evening at Striplin Field. The Panthers fall to 12-2 on the season.
Against NPU, senior Sam Hill went 3-of-3 at the plate, and sophomore Bruce Maxwell was 2-of-3. North Park scored first in the game in the top of the third, and BSC tied it up in the bottom of the fourth. The Panthers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and eighth innings, and North Park was able to score once more in the top of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome BSC.
Senior Clay Malcolm started on the mound and threw seven innings, giving up only two hits and one earned run with 11 strikeouts to move to 3-0. Senior Clay Jones came in for the final two innings and got the save.
In the nightcap against Berry, senior JD Hulse went 3-of-3, and Maxwell was 2-of-5. BSC scored twice in the bottom of the second inning, and the Vikings tied it up with two runs in the top of the fourth. Berry broke the tie in the top of the fifth, but the Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead, 4-3. Berry scored a run in the top of the eighth to knot the score at 4-4, and took the lead in the top of the ninth. The Panthers were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Vikings the upset win.
Junior Jesse Meier started for BSC and went five innings, allowing nine hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts. Senior Anthony Bianchi took the loss on the mound.
The Panthers are at home all this week, beginning with a 6 p.m. game against Emory & Henry College on Tuesday, March 8.
