Hampden-Sydney upends No. 9 BSC, 3-1
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The ninth-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team lost to Hampden-Sydney College at home today, 3-1. The Tigers move to 11-8 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 13-3.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when BSC scored on an RBI ground-out by senior Drew Leachman. The Tigers answered with two runs in the top of the sixth scored on a sacrifice fly-out and an error by the Panthers.
HSC added another run in the top of the seventh on another BSC error, and held the Panthers scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Seniors JD Hulse and Bryan Higginbotham had two hits apiece for the Panthers, with Hulse going 2-of-3 and Higginbotham going 2-of-4. BSC had seven total hits to the Tigers’ six; Patrick Kuhns led HSC with two hits.
Junior left-hander Jordan Burchett started on the mound for BSC and took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the season. He went six innings and gave up six hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. Senior Richard Vance then came in for one inning, and senior Clay Jones threw the final two innings for BSC.
For Hampden-Sydney, Connor Bradley started and went five innings, allowing five hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. Luke Rabiej came in and got the win, throwing one inning, and Kyle Grantier came in for the save. Kyle McKay and Nick Caporale also threw one inning apiece.
The Panthers are back in action at home again next week, taking on LaGrange College, Wednesday, March 16, at 6 p.m.
