DANVILLE, Ky.—The No. 9 Birmingham-Southern baseball team won two games today against Centre College, both by the score of 4-1, to open SCAC play at 2-0 on the season and move to 16-3 overall.
In the first game, BSC scored in the top of the first inning on a home run by senior Drew Leachman, and the Colonels tied it up in the bottom of the first. Another home run, this time from senior Bryan Higginbotham, gave the Panthers two more runs in the top of the second to put them up 3-1. BSC was able to score once more in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by senior JD Hulse.
Senior Clay Malcolm (4-0) started and threw six innings, giving up four hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. Senior Richard Vance came in for the final inning and got two strikeouts and the save, his first of the year.
In game two, the Panthers scored first again in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly-out by senior Sam Hill. BSC scored another single run in the top of the third when Leachman scored on a Centre error. The Colonels scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, and BSC added two more runs in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Leachman and Hill.
Junior Jesse Meier (4-0) started on the mound and went seven innings, allowing eight hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. Senior Clay Jones came in for the last two innings to record his fourth save of the year, getting three strikeouts in the process.
The teams will conclude the three-game series with a single game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
