BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The ninth-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team took two games from Rhodes today at home, winning 7-3 and 5-0 at Striplin Field to move to 20-3 overall and 5-0 in the SCAC.
In the first game, the Panthers gave up two runs in the top of the third, but immediately answered with two in the bottom of the third to tie it up. The Lynx scored again in the top of the fifth to take the lead, and held it until the bottom of the sixth when BSC scored three times to go up 5-3. The Panthers scored two more in the bottom of the eighth and held Rhodes scoreless the rest of the way.
Senior Drew Leachman was 3-of-4 at the plate for BSC; the Panthers recorded eight total hits. Sophomore Bruce Maxwell had two RBI. Senior Clay Malcolm (5-0) started and got the win, throwing six innings and giving up five hits with six strikeouts. Seniors Richard Vance and Clay Jones also saw action on the mound.
In the nightcap shutout, the Panthers scored one in the bottom of the first, three in the bottom of the third, and one in the bottom of the fourth.
Senior JD Hulse led at the plate, going 3-of-3, and BSC had eight hits in the second game as well. Leachman and Maxwell each recorded two RBI. Junior Jesse Meier (5-0) got the win after going six innings and allowing six hits with seven strikeouts. Senior Michael McCalib came in for the final inning and got two strikeouts.
The Panthers and the Lynx will square off again tomorrow in the final game of the series, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Striplin Field.
