BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Despite coming back from an 11-1 deficit to cut it to 12-10, the No. 9 Birmingham-Southern baseball team lost to Rhodes College, 12-10, Sunday afternoon at Striplin Field.
BSC moves to 19-4 overall and 5-1 in the SCAC. After winning both games yesterday, the Panthers still take the series against the Lynx, 2-1.
Rhodes scored nine runs to start the game and never trailed, adding two more in the top of the second before the Panthers finally scored a single run in the bottom of the second on a Lynx error.
The Panthers added another single run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly-out by senior Brandon Ricco, and scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by senior JD Hulse and another run scored on an error by Rhodes.
A home run by sophomore Bruce Maxwell in the bottom of the fifth cut it to 11-5, and three runs in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of a two-RBI single by senior Sam Hill and another sacrifice fly-out by Ricco, cut it to 11-8.
Rhodes scored its final run in the top of the seventh, and the Panthers scored two more in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to overcome the Lynx.
Hill and Maxwell each had two of BSC's seven hits, and Maxwell led with three RBI. Junior Jordan Burchett started on the mound and took the loss; seven other Panther pitchers came in following him, and they all combined to give up nine hits and strike out 13 batters.
The Panthers are on the road this Tuesday, taking on Berry College in Rome, Ga., before returning home on Wednesday to take on Emory University at 6 p.m.
