BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The ninth-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team got a 9-3 road win against Berry College today, moving to 20-4 on the season. The Vikings fell to 14-11.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, and the Panthers took the 3-2 lead in the top of the third on an RBI from sophomore Bruce Maxwell. BSC went up 4-2 in the top of the fourth on a home run by junior Jon Walker, but Berry cut it to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Panthers increased their lead to 8-3 in the top of the seventh with two runs scored on an error and a two-run homer by senior Brandon Ricco, and then went up 9-3 in the top of the ninth on a home run by senior Drew Leachman.
Maxwell led BSC with three of its 13 hits, going 3-of-5 at the plate, and Ricco led with three RBI. Senior Michael McCalib (2-1) started on the mound and threw five innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts. Senior Richard Vance came in for the final four innings and got the save.
BSC returns home tomorrow for a 6 p.m. game against Emory University at Striplin Field.
