BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The ninth-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team moved to 22-5 overall and 7-1 in SCAC play today with two wins against Sewanee at Striplin Field. The Panthers won by the scores of 7-1 and 12-2, both in seven innings.
BSC went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning of game one by scoring on a Sewanee error, and the Tigers tied it up in the top of the fifth on a home run by Franklin Pogue. The Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly-out by sophomore Bruce Maxwell, and BSC added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by senior Drew Leachman, a fielder's choice RBI by senior Bryan Higginbotham, and a two-RBI triple by senior Zac Stansell.
Maxwell led BSC at the plate, going 2-of-3, and he and Stansell each had two RBI. Senior Clay Malcolm (6-0) threw all seven innings for BSC, giving up four hits and one earned run with 10 strikeouts.
In game two, the Panthers got off to a quick start, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first on a two-RBI single by senior Brandon Ricco, a two-RBI double by Maxwell, and a run scored on an error. BSC scored four more runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by senior Sam Hill, another two-RBI double by Maxwell, and an RBI single by Stansell, putting the Panthers up 9-0.
Sewanee scored its two runs in the top of the fifth, scoring on a BSC error and an RBI single by Taylor Irwin. The Panthers added two more in the bottom of the fifth on a Leachman RBI single and a run scored on a wild pitch, and then scored their 12th run in the bottom of the sixth on a Sewanee passed ball.
Leachman led the Panthers with three of their 11 hits, going 3-of-4 at the plate, while Maxwell led with four RBI. Junior Jesse Meier (6-0) started and pitched five innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs with two strikeouts. Seniors Brooks Webb and Alex Goodsell came in for the last two innings.
BSC and Sewanee will wrap up the three-game conference series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Striplin Field.
