BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern baseball program has received another commitment for the upcoming season, as Westbrook Christian standout catcher Jacob Mayfield has completed his intent to enroll in the college and play for the Panthers next year.
Mayfield, a five-year varsity letter winner, was recently named Etowah County Player of the Year and First-Team All-County by the Gadsden Times. He also earned Class 2A All-State accolades from the Alabama Sports Writers Association for the third straight year. Mayfield was named 2011 Region 13 MVP, and was a member of the All-County Coaches' Team and All-Area Team his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. He hit .587 this past season with 34 RBI and 55 runs, and led the county with 15 home runs.
Mayfield was also a stand out in the classroom, graduating as Valedictorian with a 4.35 grade point average. He served as President of Westbrook's National Honor Society from 10th through 12th grade, and Vice President of Mu Alpha Theta in 11th and 12th grade. Mayfield was also a three-year member of Beta Club and was on the 95-and-Above Honor Roll from grades 9-12. Additionally, he won the Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete Class 2A State Award.
