SUWANEE, Ga.—In exclusive voting by the league's head coaches, the 23rd-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team has been picked to finish third in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference East Division.
2011 SCAC champion Trinity University was voted the preseason favorite, receiving nine of the 11 coaches' first place votes, followed by Birmingham-Southern and Hendrix College each with one first place vote.
Rhodes was selected to win the East, followed by Millsaps, BSC, Oglethorpe, Centre, and Sewanee.
The Panthers went 30-9 last year, and were ranked as high as ninth in the nation by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper before ending the season at 22nd. BSC also won its third straight SCAC East Division title, but was in the final year of reclassifying from Division I to Division III and not yet eligible for post-season competition.
BSC opens the 2012 season Feb. 10 in Mount Berry, Ga., taking on Emory in a neutral-site game hosted by future Southern Athletic Association foe Berry College. The Panthers' first home games are slated for Feb. 24 and 25 against Covenant College at Striplin Field.
