BSC completes three-game sweep of Maryville with 8-1 win

MARYVILLE, Tenn.—The 23rd-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team completed the three-game sweep of non-conference rival Maryville College with an 8-1 victory today on the road.

The Panthers have now won eight straight games and stand at 13-5 on the season.

BSC scored five of its eight runs in the top of the fifth inning, thanks in part to a two-RBI single from senior Jon Walker. The Scots scored their single run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Panthers increased their lead to 6-1 in the top of the seventh on a home run by junior Bruce Maxwell, his fifth of the year.

The Panthers added the final two runs of the game in the top of the eighth on RBI singles from junior Stephen Denton and sophomore Austin Justice.

Walker and Denton led with two hits and two RBI apiece. As a team, BSC recorded 11 hits to Maryville's five.

Senior Jesse Meier started on the mound and got the win to move to 3-1 on the season, allowing four hits with two strikeouts in seven innings. Freshmen Paul Caudill and David Bourbonnais each threw one inning each to close the game.

The Panthers return home this Tuesday and Wednesday to face Hendrix College in non-conference matches, both at 6 p.m. at Striplin Field.
