BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The No. 22 Birmingham-Southern baseball team moved to 23-6 today with two SCAC wins at home against Centre College.
The Panthers won 11-2 and 9-3 at Striplin Field, remaining undefeated in conference play at 8-0 and sitting atop the East Division standings.
The game-winning RBI came off a home run from junior Bruce Maxwell - his eighth of the season - in the bottom of the fourth inning to put BSC up 3-2.
Freshman right-hander Blake Stevens started on the mound and got the win, moving to 5-1 on the season after recording six strikeouts and giving up four hits in six innings. Sophomore right-hander Ralls Pennington pitched the final inning and struck out two batters.
In the nightcap, Centre kept it closer for longer, trailing only 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh when senior Jon Walker hit his fourth home run of the season, good for three RBI, to put BSC up 7-3. The Colonels never recovered and BSC won 9-3.
Senior right-hander Jesse Meier was the starter and pitcher of record, moving to 4-1 on the season after striking out three and giving up five hits in six innings. Sophomore right-hander Miles Nordgren came in for the final three innings and got the save, his fourth of the year, after allowing four hits with one strikeout.
The Panthers and the Colonels wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Striplin Field.
