BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern baseball team opened its annual fall Black and Gold Series this week at Striplin Field.
In the opening game, the Black team scored three in the top of the first inning and never looked back, earning a 6-4 win. Black was led at the plate by sophomore Jacob Mayfield (Gadsden, Ala.), who was 2-3 with a double and three RBI. His double in the top of the first inning capped the Black team's three-run effort.
Gold's attempt to answer in the bottom of the first was squashed when freshman Taylor McCracken (Oxford, Ala.) got his first outfield assist of the fall, cutting down freshman Eli Bashour (Chelsea, Ala.) at the plate with two outs after single by freshman Matt Brown (Goodlettsville, Tenn.).
Senior Blake Yance (Chelsea, Ala.) earned the win for Black. He threw two scoreless innings and posted two strikeouts. Sophomore David Bourbonnais (Atlanta, Ga.) earned the save. He threw one scoreless frame with two strikeouts. Bourbonnais provided some padding for the Black team by doubling at the plate and scoring a run to put Black up by two as they headed to the bottom of the last inning.
The series will continue on Thursday with Game Two.
