BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Collegiate Baseball Newspaper has ranked the Birmingham-Southern baseball team fourth in the nation in its 2013 NCAA Division III Preseason Poll.
The Panthers went 38-9 last season, winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and advancing to the championship game of the NCAA Central Regional in Millington, Tenn., in BSC's first year of post-season eligibility at the DIII level.
After dropping the first three games of the year, BSC went 29-3 over its next 32 games, including a 13-game win streak.
BSC out-scored its opponents 330-166 in 2012 and out-hit them 480-366. The Panthers also had 81 doubles, 17 triples and 30 home runs, as well as 282 RBI. The Panther pitching staff had a 3.00 combined ERA with 331 strikeouts, while allowing their opponents to hit .244.
BSC opens the 2013 season Feb. 8-10 in Jackson, Miss., at the Millsaps College Invitational.
