JACKSON, Miss. – Blake Stevens pitched struck out six Mississippi College (1-0) batters and got plenty of offensive to help Birmingham-Southern baseball (0-1) to a 5-2 win over Mississippi College (0-1) in the season opener for both schools at Twenty Field.
Stevens (1-0) gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits in six innings of work and only walked two on the afternoon to pick up the win. Miles Nordgren did not allow a hit in three scoreless innings to record the save.
The Panthers grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Jeremy Hatley RBI single in the bottom of the first only to see the Choctaws tie the game in the in the top of the second, 1-1.
Hatley, who was 2-for-4, drove in Jacob Mayfield with a double and Tanner McGill had an RBI single to score Hatley to give BSC a 3-1 lead in the fourth.
The Choctaws cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fifth before only to see the Panthers add its final runs of the game on a two-run double by Brandon Perry in the bottom of the sixth.
Birmingham-Southern and Mississippi College wrap up the two-game series in Clinton, Miss., on Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT).
