CLINTON, Miss. – Jacob Mayfield hit a home run and had four RBI to lift Birmingham-Southern (2-0) to an 8-2 win over Mississippi College (0-2) Saturday at Frierson Field.
The Panthers scored two in the first and one in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Stephen Denton walked and Evan Grovenstein singled to start the first inning. Denton and Grovenstein moved up on a double-steal and later scored on ground outs by Mayfield and Jeremy Hatley. Grovenstein finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored and drew a walk as one of three Panthers with two hits.
Brandon Perry, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, reached base on a fielder's choice and scored on a throwing error in the second.
Keaton Hankins belted a solo home run in the second to cut the deficit to 3-1 before BSC added three-runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Mayfield hit a three-run home run to extend the BSC advantage to 5-1 in the fifth and Ethan Netherton, who had two hits, highlighted the two-run sixth with an RBI double.
Freshman Kyle Royalty (1-0) struck out two and gave up one run on two hits over five innings to earn his first career win in his BSC debut. Ralls Pennington pitched two innings with a strike out and allowed an unearned run on two hits and Blake Yance worked the final two innings, giving up a hit with four strikeouts.
Ryan Glover (0-1) was the pitcher of record for the Choctaws, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in two innings.
