Big Second Inning Lifts Lynchburg To Win Over Panthers

DEMOREST, Ga. – Lynchburg College scored seven unanswered runs and took advantage of three Birmingham-Southern errors en route to a 7-1 win in the Piedmont College Spring Classic Friday at Loudermilk Field.

Birmingham-Southern took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jacob Mayfield, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored, doubled and later scored on a Jeremy Hatley RBI single before the Hornets used a five-run second and then added two runs in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.

Evan Grovenstein, who had two hits on the day, singled start the ninth and scored on an Ethan Netherton ground out for the Panthers' final run.

Kyle Royalty took the loss for the Panthers, giving up seven runs, one earned, with a strikeout on the afternoon. Brandon Miller struck out seven hitters with no walks and allowed two runs on seven hits to earn the win for the Hornets.

Birmingham-Southern takes on Southern Athletic Assocation member Millsaps College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
