DEMOREST, Ga. – Paul Caudill pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts help Birmingham-Southern (3-2) earn an 11-1 win over Piedmont College (3-5) in the final game of the Piedmont Spring Classic on Sunday.
BSC scored a run in the first and five in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. Jacob Mayfield, who went 2-for-5 with three runs scored, singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the first. Matt Brown and Stephen Denton had run scoring singles in the five-run third.
The Panthers took advantage of six errors to add two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth innings and added a run in the seventh on a Mayfield RBI single to take an 11-0 lead.
Caudill scattered two hits over his five innings, facing 20 batters to improve to 1-0. Miles Nordgren did not allow a run or hit over two innings while Blake Yance gave up an unearned run on three hits over the final two innings.
Matt Lisk left the game after three innings, striking out four but allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits to take the loss and fall to 0-2.
Birmingham-Southern hosts Transylvania and North Park for a weekend round robin tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Striplin Field. Transylvania plays North Park open the Saturday schedule at 11 p.m. followed by BSC versus North Park at 2:30 p.m. and Transylvania at 6 p.m. On Sunday BSC plays North Park at 11 a.m. followed by Transylvania at 2:30 p.m.
