BSC Baseball Defeats North Park, Falls to Transylvania

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A Jacob Mayfield sac-fly in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Birmingham-Southern to a 4-3 win over North Park Saturday at Striplin Field.  The Panthers (5-3) fell to Transylvania in the nightcap, 16-0, in seven innings.

Stephen Denton doubled to begin the ninth and moved to third base on a Taylor McCracken sacrifice bunt. Mayfield lifted a fly ball to shallow right field and Denton slide into home plate just in front of the tag to give the Panthers the win.

The game was scoreless through two plus innings when Birmingham-Southern scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead.  Brandon Perry singled to start the inning and later scored on a throwing error and Jeremy Hatley singled home Taylor McCracken and Denton.

North Park tied the game with a run in the fourth and two in the sixth. Nicholas Burger delivered an RBI single in the fourth. Joe Belmonte doubled and scored on a Nicholas Burger RBI single and Tyler Woolbright scored on a Mike Coduto sac-fly in the sixth to tie the game.

Kyle Royalty (2-0) picked up the win for BSC, striking out six and allowing three runs, two earned, in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Vince Campanella took the loss in relief of starter Nick Soldano. Campanella had two strikeouts and allowed one run on a hit in 3 1/3 innings.

Transylvania's Shelby Dixon and Matt Birkenhauer combined for a one hit shutout to help the Pioneers earn the win in the night cap.  Dixon gave up no runs on a hit and struck out two in four innings of work. Birkenhauer (1-0) pitched the final three scoreless innings and did not allow a hit to earn the win.

John Michael Cowley went 3-for-6 with four RBI and same Liggett was 3-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored to lead the Pioneers.

Matt Brown's infield single in the third accounted for the Panthers lone hit.

Transylvania went 2-0 on the day, winning the first game of the day 5-1 over North Park.

Birmingham-Southern plays North Park at 11:30 a.m. and Transylvania at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday to close out the weekend.
