Panther Baseball Falls To No. 8 Adrian And IWU On Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –  Birmingham-Southern baseball (11-6) could not get the offense clicking while dropping a pair of games to No. 8 Adrian, 5-2, and Illinois Wesleyan, 4-1, Sunday at Striplin Field.

In game one, Adrian took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Garrett Green singled home two runs and Dan Heatherly drove in the third run with a single.

BSC answered in the bottom half of the third on a David Bourbonnais single to cut the AC lead to 3-1.

The Bulldogs extended the lead to 5-1 in the sixth.  A run came home on an error and Ben Yax singled in the second run.

Bourbonnais reached on an error in the eighth and scored on a Kevin Shelton pinch-hit single for BSC's final run of the inning.

Tanner McGill went 3-for-4 to lead the Panthers in game one. Grovenstein, Bourbonnais, Ethan Netherton, Tommy Allmond, Shelton and Matt Brown had a hit apiece.

Paul Caudill took the loss for the Panthers to fall to 2-1. Caudill struck out three and allowed three runs on four hits. Ralls Pennington gave up two runs on six hits with three strikeouts in relief.

Eric Schmidt struck out six and scattered nine hits while giving up two runs as the Adrian pitcher of record.  Lucas Willitzer picked up his first save, striking out two in a scoreless ninth.

Illinois Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Bobby Czarnowski only to see the Panthers tie the game on an Ethan Netherton RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

The Titans got a run in the third and two in the sixth to build a 4-1 lead. Kevin Callahan, who was 2-for-5 with two doubles, doubled in a run in the third. Johnathan Ericson had an RBI single and a Czarnowski sac-fly got the last run home in the sixth.

Netherton and Shelton finished the game with two hits while Brandon Perry and Taylor McCracken

Ethan Wilkinson (0-1) was the pitcher of record for the Panthers, allowing two runs on six hits.

John Munyon (1-0) went seven innings with six strikeouts and gave one run on five hits to earn the win for IWU. John Frueh had a strikeout in a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.

Birmingham-Southern travels to Huntingdon College for a midweek game on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Montgomery, Ala.
