BSC Baseball Edges Oglethorpe, 3-1
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern used solid pitching and a couple of key hits to earn a 3-1 Southern Athletic Association win over Oglethorpe (1-13; 1-4 SAA) Saturday at Striplin Field.
A Jeff Brothers RBI single gave the Stormy Petrels a 1-0 lead in the top of the third only to see BSC tie the game in the bottom half when Ethan Netherton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Oglethorpe had the tying and go-ahead runs at first and second in the eighth. Cory Leff lifted a fly ball to shallow right field that appeared to be down for a single but first baseman Tommy Allmon made an over the shoulder catch to hold the runners. Miles Nordgren struck out Casey Tuttle looking to end the threat.
BSC put an insurance run on the board in the eighth. Stephen Denton was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a McCracken double and scored on a Grovenstein sac-fly to give BSC a 3-1 lead.
Starter Ralls Pennington (1-2) pitched five innings with three strikeouts and gave up one run on two hits to earn the win. Nordgren gave up only one hit with three strikeouts in three scoreless innings pitched and Blake Yance closed things out in the ninth to earn his third save.
Emmett Goodman was the pitcher of record for the Oglethorpe, falling to 0-4. Goodman gave up two runs, on earned on five hits with five strikeouts.
Birmingham-Southern and Oglethorpe wrap up the SAA series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
