CONWAY, Ark. – Birmingham-Southern scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 6-3 Southern Athletic Association win over Hendrix College Friday at UCA's Bear Stadium.
The Panthers won their fifth straight game while improving to 16-7 and 7-0 in the Southern Athletic Association. Hendrix fell to 9-14 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
Trailing 3-2 with one out in the ninth, Jacob Mayfield reached on a dropped fly ball and ended up at second base on the play. Tanner McGill was hit by a pitch and Brandon Perry Walk to load the bases with two outs. Zach Wagner singled through left side to bring home Perry and McGill and Mayfield trotted home on an error by the left fielder. Jake Campbell followed with an RBI single to score Casey Lambert for a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Hendrix got on the board first with a two run fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead only to see BSC score twice in the fifth to tie the game. Perry walked and scored on a Campbell triple and Campbell later scored on a Stephen Denton bunt single.
The Warriors took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a Jacob Pershke RBI single.
Miles Nordgren picked up the win on the mound to improve to 2-0. Nordgren pitched a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout and Blake Yance closed things out in the ninth with a strikeout to record his fourth save.
Campbell had three hits and Taylor McCracken followed with two hits to lead BSC. Allmon, Wagner, and Denton had a hit apiece.
Starter Ted Smoyer was the pitcher of record for the Warriors to drop to 2-2. Smoyer gave up six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 8.2 innings.
Saturday's game between BSC and Hendrix ahas been changed to a 12 p.m. start and moves back to the Hendrix College campus. Sunday's time is now listed as to be announced.
