BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—A dominant pitching effort from junior starter Blake Stevens and senior Miles Nordgren stymied the batters of visiting LaGrange College and helped earn the Birmingham-Southern baseball team a 1-0 win in 10 innings on opening day of the 2014 campaign, Friday afternoon at Striplin Field.
The tandem, which did not allow a LaGrange runner past second all afternoon, combined to surrender only four hits and no walks. Stevens struck out nine batters in his seven innings of work. Nordgren earned the win after facing only eleven batters in three innings of relief.
After a scoreless first nine innings, the Panther offense found its rhythm with a lead-off double down the left field line from junior Jacob Mayfield. A passed ball during the following at-bat landed Mayfield at third. LaGrange then issued two consecutive intentional passes, one to junior David Bourbonnais and then to senior Jeremy Hatley, to load the bases with no outs. A single from sophomore Matt Brown in the next at-bat plated Mayfield to notch the 1-0 extra-innings victory.
Birmingham-Southern will hit the road Sunday for a twin bill against LaGrange in LaGrange, Ga. The first game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. Eastern first pitch.
