Baseball sweeps LaGrange with two road wins

LaGRANGE Ga.—Junior Jacob Mayfield hit for the cycle and notched four RBI in game two of a Sunday doubleheader against LaGrange College (0-3) in a 6-2 victory. BSC (3-0) also earned a 6-3 win in game one at Cleaveland Field in LaGrange, Ga., to claim the sweep of the weekend series.

Mayfield's first step towards the cycle was a double in the first that scored lead-off batter sophomore Taylor McCracken who was on second after earning a pass to first after being hit by a pitch and then stealing second. Senior Evan Grovenstein led off the third with a single and was brought home by Mayfield's triple in the following at-bat to give BSC a quick 2-0 lead after three innings of play. The tandem of Mayfield and Grovenstein continued producing in the fifth when Mayfield homered with Grovenstein on first after being hit by a pitch, the second of three BSC batters to take one for the team. Mayfield's two-out single in the eighth completed the cycle.

On the bump, senior starter Ralls Pennington (1-0) picked up the victory after five innings of work, allowing only one hit and fanning six. Four BSC relievers combined to hold LaGrange to only two runs on three hits, while striking out five more, to close out the game.

The first game of the day saw BSC quickly find themselves in a 1-0 hole after the home half of the first. The visiting Panthers evened the score in the second when junior David Bourbonnais led off the frame with a double and then was immediately plated in the next at-bat when senior Jeremy Hatley singled. BSC extended its lead to 3-1 in the fourth after a LaGrange error scored both Bourbonnais and Mayfield. Grovenstein's opening single in the sixth, combined with his steal of second and a wild pitch two batters later, gave the Panthers a 4-1 lead.

BSC hurlers, sophomore Kyle Royalty and freshman Ryan Gaines (1-0), would make those four runs hold up as the pair teamed up to hold LaGrange to three hits an no runs through the seventh inning. LaGrange scored a single run in their half of both the eighth and ninth innings. However, BSC answered with two in the ninth.

The Panthers return home to host next weekend's BSC Invitational, featuring Piedmont College, Millsaps College, Blackburn College, and North Park University. BSC faces Blackburn on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2:45 p.m., then takes on North Park on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. and Piedmont at 5 p.m.
