SEWANEE, Tenn.—No. 24 Birmingham-Southern shut out Sewanee today on the road, 10-0, to complete the three-game conference sweep.
The Panthers move to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Athletic Association; the Tigers fall to 5-3 overall and 0-3 in the SAA after a 5-0 start prior to this weekend's series.
Sophomore Taylor McCracken was 3-5 at the plate for BSC, while freshman Mason Tritt was 2-3 with a home run. The Panthers scored single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings courtesy of a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jack Rhodes and an RBI single by senior Evan Grovenstein.
BSC added seven runs in the top of the sixth. Junior Jake Campbell RBI singled to plate sophomore Matt Brown, followed by a Grovenstein sac-fly to bring Tritt home. McCracken singled to score Campbell, and junior Jacob Mayfield doubled to bring McCracken across the plate. A single by senior Jeremy Hatley and a two-RBI single from freshman Zach Wingate wrapped up the inning's scoring and put BSC up 9-0.
Tritt sent the ball over the fence in the top of the seventh to put the Panthers up 10-0, and the game ended after seven innings when Sewanee did not score in the bottom of the seventh.
BSC recorded 12 hits while allowing five by the Tigers. Senior Ralls Pennington started on the mound and went six innings, moving to 2-1 on the season after giving up five hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Freshman Ryan Gaines and sophomore Wilson Jamison also saw time on the mound in the seventh.
The Panthers are at home this Wednesday hosting in-state rival Huntingdon at 6 p.m., and will host a conference series against No. 20 Millsaps this weekend, with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 8, and a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.
