BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The No. 21 Birmingham-Southern baseball team lost at home Wednesday evening to Hampden-Sydney College, losing 10-1 at Striplin Field.
BSC falls to 12-3, while the Tigers move to 15-3.
HSC opened the game with a run in the top of the first, and proceeded to score in the next three innings as well, quickly pulling out to a 9-0 lead before the Panthers finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After sophomore Taylor McCracken singled to lead off, he stole second and went to third on a single by senior Evan Grovenstein before scoring on a fielder's choice RBI from junior Jacob Mayfield. The Tigers added one more run in the top of the seventh while holding BSC scoreless the rest of the way.
Sophomore Kyle Royalty (0-1) started and took the loss after throwing three innings and giving up eight hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts. Freshman Ryan Gaines, sophomore Wilson Jamison, freshman Stephen Himic, junior David Bourbonnais, and freshman Jack Rhodes also saw time on the mound.
McCracken and senior Jeremy Hatley went 2-4 at the plate to lead BSC, collecting six hits as a team. The Tigers got 14 hits, led by Hunter Lewis who was 4-5.
The Panthers are at home this weekend hosting a three-game Southern Athletic Association series against Hendrix College. Games are Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
