LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.—After racing out to a 16-3 lead in the first eight innings, the No. 15 Birmingham-Southern baseball team held off a late-game rally by Covenant College to win 16-10, Tuesday afternoon in Lookout Mountain, Ga.
The Panthers move to 28-9, while the Scots fall to 21-11.
After a scoreless first inning, BSC scored four runs in the second, courtesy of a grand slam by freshman Mason Tritt, and three in the third to lead 7-0 before Covenant scored its first run in the home half of the third. The Scots cut the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but BSC proceeded to score nine straight after that—one in the fifth, four in the sixth, three in the seventh, and one in the eighth—pulling out to a 16-3 lead. The Scots tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth, cutting it to 16-9, and then added one more in the bottom of the ninth, leading off the inning with a home run and then loading the bases with two outs before junior closer David Bourbonnais ended the game by striking out the final batter for the win.
Bourbonnais was also stellar at the plate, going 5-6 with four RBI. Freshman Mason Tritt also recorded four RBI with his grand slam. Senior Evan Grovenstein recorded three RBI, and freshman Zach Wingate walked three times.
BSC wraps up the regular season this weekend in Memphis, traveling to face No. 27 Rhodes in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and a 1 p.m. single game on Saturday. The series will determine the regular season Southern Athletic Association champion. The Panthers will then return to Striplin Field to host a pod of the 2014 SAA Championship, April 24-27, as either the one or two seed.
