AUBURNDALE, Fla.—The seventh-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team suffered its first loss of the season Monday evening, falling to William Paterson University, 8-2, in Auburndale, Fla.
The Panthers fell to 14-1, while the Pioneers moved to 4-1.
BSC scored early, putting single runs up in the bottom of the first and second innings. The first run came off an RBI single from sophomore Zach Wingate, plating senior Jacob Mayfield who reached with a double down the left field line. In the second, after two walks put runners on first and second, an RBI single to right field by junior Taylor McCracken put BSC up 2-0.
WPU answered in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to take the lead, then added four more in the top of the fifth and one more in the top of the sixth.
The Panthers threatened in the bottom of the seventh, getting runners on second and third, but were unable to score. Other than that inning, no other Panther made it further than first base after the second inning.
Junior hurler Miller Bonds (0-1) started and threw 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and six earned runs with three strikeouts. Sophomore Mac Crawford, sophomore Wesley Walker, and senior Ben Hession finished the game, combining for five hits and two earned runs.
Junior Matt Brown was 2-4 at the plate, and McCracken and Mayfield were both 2-5. The Panthers left 11 total runners stranded.
BSC faces Endicott College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. ET and Rutgers-Camden at 6 p.m. ET.
