BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Just off their four day, fall break trip to the Dominican Republic, the 2017 Birmingham-Southern baseball team got back on the field for the annual Black and Gold Series to wrap up fall practice. In game one of the Black and Gold Series, freshman Will Buser hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the Black team to a 5-3 win.
The gold team started the scoring in the top of the first. With one out, Paul Williamson singled to left field, and senior center fielder Sam Roberts followed with a towering home run to left to give Gold a 2-0 lead.
Black starting pitcher Stephen Himic settled in with a scoreless second and third innings. Gold starter Ryan Gaines started the game with consecutive 1-2-3 innings, however Black plated one run in the bottom of the third inning. Preston White led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a David Scott ground ball later in the inning to close the gap to 2-1 Gold.
In the bottom of the fifth, Gold increased its lead to 3-1 on a pinch hit, two out home run to left off the bat of sophomore Eric Wilson.
Black answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. White knocked a one out triple, and scored on a Buser single later in the inning. With two outs, Scott plated Buser with a two out RBI up the middle to even the score.
After White nearly ended the game with a deep drive to left field that was caught at the fence with the score tied 3-3 and two outs, freshman Trey Roach hit a pinch-hit double to set the stage for Buser's game winning home run to left field.
For the game, Buser led the way with a 3-for-3 performance and three runs batted in. David Scott had two RBI, and White was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
