BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Concordia (TX) handed the No. 5 Birmingham-Southern baseball team its first home loss of the season Sunday afternoon in a 6-2 decision. The Panthers moved to 5-2 overall with the loss.
Sam Roberts (Johns Creek, Ga./Blessed Trinity) went 2-for-4 to lead the team. The loss went to John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep). Starter Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) went four innings and struck out a game-high three batters.
Down with one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Panthers loaded the bases. Concordia switched out its reliever for Ryan Capel. He struck out his first batter which brought David Scott (Atlanta, Ga./Woodward Academy) up to the plate with two outs on the board. Scott battled to a 3-2 count and drilled the next pitch into the left side. But the shortstop made a great play in the gap and threw him out at first to end the game.
The Panthers host a big weekend of baseball February 25-26 next. They welcome North Park and Washington (Mo.) Striplin Field for five combined games. North Park will face Washington (Mo.) in a neutral site game on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. followed by the Panthers taking on Washington (Mo.) at 2:15 p.m. The night closes with BSC against North Park at 5:30 p.m.
