Baseball Gets Road Series Sweep Over Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team swept Sewanee on the road this weekend, taking three games from the Tigers 7-4, 6-1 and 3-2.

Due to weather concerns, BSC and Sewanee played one game on Saturday and a doubleheader on Sunday.

Game 1

Junior right-hander Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start in game one of the series and threw a complete game. Cook allowed four runs, two earned, in nine innings pitched, giving up nine hits and striking out five batters.

Designated hitter Will Evans (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill HS) and second baseman Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) led the Panthers offensively, both going 4-for-5 from the plate. Evans scored three runs while Toner drove in four runs, including a two-run homer in the seventh.

With the win, Cook improved to 5-1 on the season.

Game 2

In game two on Sunday, junior right-hander John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) got the start on the mound for BSC. He pitched six innings, allowing just one run off six hits. He finished with three strikeouts and earned the win.

Toner had another impressive game at the plate, recording two hits on three at-bats with an RBI and three runs scored.

Freshman Tristan Harvin (Dothan, Ala./Houston Academy) came in in relief for Shirley in the seventh inning and finished off the Tigers to secure the 6-1 win.

Game 3

Sophomore Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) was tabbed as the starter for BSC in the series finale, pitching four innings and allowing two earned runs off five hits.

After a Ross Anderson (Section, Ala./Section HS) solo homer in the top of the third put the Panthers up 1-0, the Tigers responded with a two-run bottom third.

A Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) solo home run in the fifth inning tied up the ballgame before a Will Toner single scored Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) to give BSC the lead.

Junior Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS), who came in to pitch in the fifth inning, shut down Sewanee in the last two innings, giving BSC the 3-2 win and the series sweep.

After the weekend series, the Panthers improved to 11-9 overall and 4-5 in the SAA. Birmingham-Southern will travel to face Emory in Atlanta, Ga. for its next game on Tuesday, March 20.
