Baseball Swept on the Road by Rhodes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team was swept by Rhodes College on Saturday afternoon, suffering two road defeats at the hand of the Lynx.

Right-hander John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) got the start in the first game, pitching four innings and allowing six runs off eight hits. He had two strikeouts.

Freshman outfielder Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run. Senior Ross Anderson (Section, Ala./Section HS) added a two-run homer in the second inning.

BSC was defeated 12-4 after nine innings.

In the second game, Hanan Maulding (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) got the start on the mound. He pitched two and a third innings, allowing four runs off three hits.

Designated hitter Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) was BSC's leader at the plate, batting 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and a home run.

Second baseman Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) also finished the game with two RBI.

Birmingham-Southern was defeated 10-6 in the second game.

With the losses, Birmingham-Southern drops to 15-13 overall and 6-9 in the Southern Athletic Association.

The Panthers will travel to face Huntingdon for its next game on Tuesday, April 3.
