SAA Tournament: Baseball Opens with Win Over Millsaps

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team opened up the 2018 Southern Athletic Association Tournament with a 9-4 win over the Millsaps College Majors on Thursday afternoon.

The Panthers took the initial lead in the first inning 1-0 after a Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) RBI single, but the Majors took the lead with runs in the third and fourth innings.

A monster five-run sixth inning, spurred by BSC's situational hitting and compounded by a couple Millsaps errors, put the Panthers back on top 6-3.

Birmingham-Southern would go on to add two more runs in the seventh and its final run in the eighth inning.

Junior right-hander Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start and recorded the win for BSC. Cook pitched seven innings, allowing three runs off six hits and striking out four batters.

Hamel, the designated hitter, was the offensive leader for the Panthers, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Freshman outfielder Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base.

Birmingham-Southern advances to the winner's side of the bracket and will face the winner of No. 1 Berry and No. 8 Hendrix tomorrow, Friday, April 20.
