MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The No. 4 seed Birmingham-Southern baseball team was eliminated from the 2018 Southern Athletic Association Tournament on Friday night, falling short in a 9-7 comeback attempt against the No. 5 seed Millsaps.
The two teams battled back and forth for the first few innings with BSC taking a 4-2 lead over the Majors after three innings. But a five-run sixth inning by Millsaps put them back on top 7-4. Millsaps added two more runs in the eighth.
With three outs to go, the Panthers attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs. Junior Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) accounted for all three of BSC's runs in the final half inning, hitting a two-out, two-run triple and scoring on a wild pitch. However, Wise's effort was not enough to get the Panthers level with Millsaps and the Majors took the win.
Junior John Michael Shirley (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start for BSC and ended up on the hook for the loss, pitching five and a third innings and allowing seven runs off eight hits. He struck out six batters.
Birmingham-Southern exits the SAA Tournament with a overall season record of 22-17 and an 11-10 record in the conference.
