BSC Splits Doubleheader with LaGrange

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team earned a split in Saturday's doubleheader with LaGrange, moving to 1-2 overall early in the 2019 season.

Game 1
BSC fell to the Panthers from LaGrange 5-2 in the first game of the doubleheader.

LaGrange scored two runs in the second and fifth innings and tacked on another run in the seventh. BSC's two runs came in the seventh inning when a throwing error by the LaGrange shortstop scored Will Evans (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr's Mill HS) and Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS).

Junior right-hander Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound, throwing six innings, allowing four runs off nine hits and striking out two. He picked up the loss.

Freshman righty Oliver Livingston (Decatur, Ga./Decatur HS) came in in relief of Hammond, pitching three innings while allowing a run off three hits and recording two strikeouts.

Game 2
Birmingham-Southern picked up a 4-1 win in the final game of the day, picking up the game-winning runs in the sixth inning.

LaGrange drew first blood, scoring a run in the top of the third, but BSC tied it back up when senior Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) scored from third base on a passed ball.

Hamel would come back around as the go-ahead run in the sixth inning when junior Cory Price (Hoover, Ala./UAH) smashed his first home run as a Panther, giving BSC a 3-1 lead.

Junior Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) added another insurance run in the seventh, hitting a solo home run, his first of the season.

Senior right-hander John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) got the start, pitching four and one-third innings, but it was fellow senior Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) who picked up the win as a reliever. Misischia threw three and one-third innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four.

Junior Robbie Lively (Helena, Ala./Southern Union) came in to pitch the final out of the eighth and the ninth inning, earning the save.

Up next, Birmingham-Southern will travel to Trinity University in Texas for a three-game series Feb. 15-17.
