JACKSON, Miss. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team started off the Southern Athletic Association season with a 6-3 road win at Millsaps College on Friday afternoon.
Neither team could find its way across the plate for the next six innings until a two-run home run by Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) increased BSC's lead to 4-0. Hamel finished the game with a team-high three hits.
A two-RBI single by Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) in the next inning capped the scoring for the Panthers, giving them a commanding 6-2 lead heading into the ninth.
Senior righty Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound for Birmingham-Southern. He pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits and three walks while striking out six batters. Cook earned the win with his performance and his season ERA now sits at 1.50, third best in the SAA among pitchers with 14 or more innings pitched.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 11-4 overall. Birmingham-Southern will wrap up the series with Millsaps with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9.
