JACKSON, Miss. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team picked up two wins at Millsaps on Saturday to earn the clean sweep of the Majors in its first Southern Athletic Association series of 2019.
The Panthers took game one 15-6 before grabbing the final game 9-1. The two wins improved BSC to 13-4 overall and 3-0 in the SAA.
Right-hander John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) got the start on the bump for the Panthers, pitching five innings and allowing five runs – two earned – off six hits. All of Shirley's runs given up came in the second inning. He struck out six and earned his third win of the season with his performance.
Birmingham-Southern got off to a hot start offensively, plating eight runs in the top of the second inning. The Panthers would add two more runs in the following inning and four in the fifth inning. BSC capped the scoring with a single run in the ninth to give them the 15-6 lead.
At the plate, BSC was led by sophomore outfielder Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) who had four hits in six at-bats, including a double and an RBI.
Freshman Luke DePiero (Atlanta, Ga./Walker HS) accounted for the lion's share of the runs produced, bringing around four teammates and scoring a run himself.
Three other Panthers had two RBI's.
Birmingham-Southern dominated again in the final game of the series, scoring nine runs and allowing just one in the seven-inning game.
The Panthers sent Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) out to start the game on the mound. Hammond allowed just two hits in five shutout innings while striking out five batters and walking just one.
Steadman kept his hot bat going in the leadoff role with another three hits in four at-bats. He also led the Panthers with three RBI's and three runs scored in the game.
