BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team fell to Rhodes College 9-6 on Sunday afternoon, dropping to 15-6 overall and 4-2 in the Southern Athletic Association.
Junior Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound pitching two innings while allowing six runs off seven hits.
The Lynx scored five of their nine runs in the third inning, giving them a 6-0 lead going into the bottom half. The Panthers tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI fielder's choice and a Cory Price (Hoover, Ala./UAH) RBI single to left field.
BSC added three more runs in the fifth off a three-RBI double by outfielder Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) and tied the game up with a Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) in the next inning.
Junior southpaw Hanan Mauldin (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) came in in relief of the starter Hammond in the third, tossing five shutout innings and getting the Panthers to the eighth with the game tied 6-6.
Trouble for the home side came in the top of the eighth when the Lynx plated three runs and capped the scoring. Sophomore Will Evans (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill HS) ended up on the hook for the loss.
Birmingham-Southern will travel to Huntingdon for its next game on Tuesday, March 19.
