MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 23-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team defeated No. 13 Huntingdon College 6-3 in a top 25 matchup Tuesday night.
The Panthers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-RBI double by junior Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS), but the home side Hawks took the lead after scoring one run in each of the first, second and fourth innings.
Down by one run, freshman Luke DePiero (Atlanta, Ga./Walker HS) tied it up in the seventh with an RBI single that scored Toner.
The Panthers went on to score what would prove to be the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning when Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) scored from third base on a Huntingdon wild pitch.
BSC tacked on two more insurance runs in the inning after a throwing error and a fielder's choice RBI increased its lead to 6-3.
Sophomore Adam Richards (Santa Rose Beach, Fla./South Walton HS), who came in in relief of starter Tristan Harvin (Dothan, Ala./Houston Academy), got the win. Senior lefty Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) came in in the eighth inning and earned the save.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 16-6 on the year and add another top 25 win to their resume.
Birmingham-Southern will travel to Arkansas for their next few games, a Southern Athletic Association series against Hendrix College. The Panthers and Warriors will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 starting at 1 p.m.
